Laapataa Ladies director Kiran Rao denies dating Aamir Khan when he was still married to Reena Dutta: 'I was actually seeing...'

After being married to each other for 16 years, Kiran Rao and actor Aamir Khan announced their separation in 2021. The duo, however, remained cordial after their divorce and share a close bond as friends even now. Kiran Rao’s recent directorial _Laaptaa Ladie_s, which opened to a warm response from the audience, has been co-produced by Aamir Khan’s production house. Many believe that the duo started dating during the making of Lagaan and Kiran is the reason why the actor ended his first marriage with Reena Dutta. Recently, the actor’s ex-wife and filmmaker addressed the rumours and revealed the truth.

As Kiran Rao spoke to Zoom recently, she opened up on her dating life with Aamir Khan. Refuting the claims that she was dating the Dangal actor during the making of Lagaan, the filmmaker said, “Lots of people think that Aamir and I connected on Lagaan, we absolutely didn’t. Aamir and I got together during Swades, he was going to shoot Mangal Pandey at the time. We had just shot a couple of commercials with Ashutosh Gowariker for Coke and that is where Aamir and I reconnected. 3-4 years after _Lagaan_. I wasn’t in touch with him.”

She continued to add that Aamir and her hardly spoke during the filming of Lagaan and that she was involved with someone else at that particular period. Kiran divulged, “When Aamir and I started going out in 2004, everybody thought that this started when we were shooting for Lagaan, and this caused the divorce, which was not the fact.”

Moving further, Kiran also opened up on the challenges that she and Aamir faced during their relationship. The director said that they underwent couples counselling to address issues in their relationship as marrying someone who has earlier been in a relationship could affect your current relationship due to the emotional baggage that the person carries. Then, she also recommended others undergo counselling as it changes the way you see the other person and is extremely beneficial.

Kiran and Aamir Khan entered married life in 2005. However, things did not go well, and they parted ways in 2021. Now, they raise their son Azad together. Kiran’s recently released second directorial project, Laapataa Ladies, has been praised by fans and celebrities including Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap for the intriguing plot of the film.
