Well, India is a land of mystery and has many untapped elements. The ancient concept of karma and astrology is deeply imbibed in our country and the movie titled Kartam Bhugtam, which means ’what goes around, comes around’ or ‘as you sow, so shall you reap’, explores it. It is directed by Sohum P Shah, who previously helmed movies like Kaal and Luck. While the storyline of the movie looks interesting does it leave an impact with its narrative? Let’s find out…
Dev Joshi (Shreyas Talpade) comes to his hometown Bhopal from Auckland to sell all his assets and property with the help of his friend Gaurav. On their way home, Gaurav meets Anna (Vijay Raaz) an astrologer. While a senior doctor has told Gaurav that there is no chance of his mom’s survival, Anna tells him to follow his remedy and mom will be fine. His prediction turns right followed by another prediction that Gaurav will soon shift to Dubai to fulfil his dream of working as a chef.
Now, Dev, who is facing obstacles in the dealings of his ancestral properties, goes to Anna for a solution. Anna gives him remedies and tells him to follow certain rituals. Dev sees all his obstacles are vanishing and things are falling into place. Soon, he becomes close to Anna, his wife (played by Madhoo) and their son Sameer.
While finalizing his last deal followed by his return to Auckland, a big turnaround happens and Dev’s life changes forever and he turns into a paranoid schizophrenia patient. His partner Jia (Aksha Pardasany) helps him to recover and while heading back home they come to know the reason behind Dev’s life-changing event and how it is associated with Anna, Amma, Sameer and Gaurav. And what happens after that? Well, you have to watch Kartam Bhugtam for that twist.
Director Sohum Shah has written an interesting but somehow it didn’t turn out to be what was expected through its execution. While some twists are good, some fail to impress.
Talking about the performances, Shreyas Talpade and Vijay Raaz have done a fine job with their portrayals. Madhoo is great as vicious Amma. Aksha Pardasany has a great screen presence and plays her character well.
On the whole, Kartam Bhugtam has an interesting storyline but fails to captivate due to its poor execution.
