Karan Johar: 'Don't understand why directors & producers want to take all the credit when writers deserve it'

Filmmaker Karan Johar has been a part of the Hindi film industry for more than 30 years. He made his debut as a director in 1998. In these last 27 years, the filmmaker has become one of the greatest success stories of all time. And this could not have been possible without the team that he has worked with. But the most important aspect of any film is the writing. And in a recent interview with Komal Nahta for his show Game Changers, Johar had something to say.

Karan Johar on content being the king

In another interview a few years back, the filmmaker said, “I think the only king today in Bollywood is content. I think all of us are just surviving on the basis of that if at all. Content is truly the king. There are no rulers. It’s just good cinema, good content that really define what we stand for today. Whoever believes that they are above content are in denial and are going about through delusion. And I think they must be aware that nothing precedes really good film.”

He added, “There are films like Uri, Kabir Singh and now Chhichhore and Dream Girl, everything performing so outstandingly at the box office. It’s no longer about the big names, the big movie stars, the big setups that are really attracting footfalls. It is strong content.”

Karan Johar breaks silence on destroying people’s career in Bollywood

Karan Johar was on Raj Shamani’s podcast when he addressed the allegations of destroying people’s career in Bollywood. He said, “People say iska iska career destroy kiya. Maine kisi ka kuch nahi kiya. Maine bas apna kaam kiya.”

“I have worked with all kinds of actors. I can list several actors and other talents who did their first films with us - many of whom were complete outsiders,” he said, adding, “I’ve launched around 50 actors and 25 directors, many of whom come from non-film backgrounds. Yet, no one ever talks about that.”
