‘Kaneez’: Siddharth Nigam, Gulki Joshi, Shaan, Papon And Javed Ali's musical play set to premiere in Mumbai

An opulent Broadway-style musical titled ‘Kaneez’ will premiere at the Jamshed Bhabha Auditorium in Mumbai on November 28 and 29, 2025. Directed by theatre veteran Randhir Ranjan Roy, this production intricately weaves a narrative exploring profound themes of love and societal constraints within a divided society.

‘Kaneez’ tells the poignant love story of a young priest essayed by Siddharth Nigam and Raayo and an enchanting tawaif portrayed by Gulki Joshi and Kirti Killedar. Their deeply connected souls navigate the rigid boundaries of faith and caste, forging a secret romance against the backdrop of tradition and social prejudice, marked by longing and sacrifice.

Inspired by the true story of Tanno Bai, a celebrated courtesan in 1920s from Patna, and her devoted admirer, the ritualistic priest Dharikshan Tiwari, this tale captures the extraordinary complexities of love that transcend societal norms. Over a century later, ‘Kaneez’ brings these timeless themes to the forefront, encouraging audiences to reflect on the enduring nature of love.

The production features a remarkable blend of live music and dynamic choreography by Arunima Roy and immersive stage designs by Chetan Chand. With music orchestrated by the talented duo Rahul-Anjan and vocal performances from celebrated artists including Shaan, Papon, Javed Ali and Kirti Killedar, ‘Kaneez’ will offer a vibrant tapestry of bhajans, thumris, and elements of both classical and retro Indian music.
