Actor-politician Jaya Bachchan recently grabbed headlines for mocking the title of Akshay Kumar’s movie Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and called it a flop. However, her comments garnered backlash from fans with many defending the movie for its strong social message.
“Abhi aap naam bhi dekhiye toh mai aise picturein kabhi na dekhu. Toilet Ek Prem Katha, yeh koi naam hai? Yeh koi title hai? Please bataiye aap logo me se kitne log iss tarah ki title wali film dekhne jayenge. (You look at the name. I would never watch a film with such a title. Is this a title? You tell me how many of you would watch a film with such a name.)” she said while talking at the India TV Conclave.
When she asked if they’d be fine with watching a film with such a title, and a few people raised their hands, Jaya responded, “Among so many people, hardly four people want to watch the film; it’s very sad. Yeh toh flop hai (It is a flop).”
Reacting to her comment, one netizen tweeted, “Jaya Bachchan says nobody will watch movies with name like Toilet Ek Prem Katha, Padman. Collections: Toilet Ek Prem Katha- 216 crore. Padman- 191 crores. Much more than movies of Abhishek. Btw Amitabh Bachchan made a movie Piku where all he talked about was toilet.”
“In reality, we want to watch socially relevant movies which have little violence and more engaging story to it. What nonsense she is speaking,” wrote another user.
“Ironically, these movies highlighted social issues of women who faced issues for lack of toilets menstrual hygiene… Women laughing on such important issues just show the bubble they live in…” tweeted another person on X.
Toilet: Ek Prem Katha also featured Bhumi Pednekar and Anupam Kher in prominent roles. It was directed by Shree Narayan Singh
