I won’t say that the star cast was a waste. But had the writer and the maker concentrated on the story telling, it would have been a much better watch. I would say the beautiful star cast consisting of Ishaan Khatter, Nicole Kidman and Eve Hewson made the show a delightful watch. But I guess the makers forgot that the cinema understanding audiences today want a story that will totally consume them other than just a good looking cast.
There was nothing that was immersive about the storyline of Netflix’s The Perfect Couple . This is a very done and dusted show where a celebrated mystery writer is the main suspect of the murder that happens in her house during the preparation of the marriage ceremony of her middle son. The six-episode show features Nicole Kidman as Greer Garrison Winbury who is a control freak mother and a wife. She is the wife of a rich man who probably can’t keep his libido under control.
There is a back story to Greer Garrison Winbury (Nicole Kidman). She supported her entire family when she didn’t get married to her rich husband. She spouts out her entire story on how she met her husband to her three sons when her mysterious brother shows up in the Netflix’s show. That is a little bit of an interesting part of the story. But the rest of the show was predictable and boring.
But one good thing about Netflix’s The Perfect Couple that everybody gets enough screen time and there is no real lead to the show. Basically everybody had an important role to play and not just Greer Garrison Winbury (Nicole Kidman). The house help too had an interesting part in the entire show and she was indeed a very interesting character. As for Ishan Khatter , the mystery created around him and his background couldn’t live up to the expectations of the audiences. But his performance was good no doubt, though his craft was underused. I guess we will get a lot of answers if there is another season of The Perfect Couple.
Directed by Susanne Bier, who previously made The Night Manager and The Undoing, Netflix’s The Perfect Couple was quite a disappointment. It was just an all fluff show with no meat. Eve Hewson did a decent job, but sadly she too couldn’t save a poorly written show. On the whole, the show lacked depth and was not one bit engaging like the previous works of Susanne Bier.
