What happened on February 2002 at the Godhra railway station in Gujarat?
According to reports published in LIfestyleAsia “A total of 1,700 people, including a mix of pilgrims and karsevaks, were returning from Ayodhya when the train made its scheduled stop at Godhra Junction railway station, four hours later than its actual arrival. The pilgrims had gone to the holy city to take part in a ceremony called the Purnahuti Maha Yagna. The train started leaving the platform when an emergency chain was pulled inside the train. The Sabarmati Express stopped near the signal point, which led to it being attacked by vigilantes.”
The report further says, “As many as 2,000 people attacked the train. It started with stone-pelting, after which four train coaches were set alight. 59 people got trapped inside the train because of the fire and were killed in the burning train. This included 27 women and 10 children, while 48 others were injured.”
Why was the Sabarmati Express burnt down?
Many are of the opinion, as per reports that it was a kind of a retaliation to what happened in 2002 Gujarat riots that took place in Godhra. Many were killed and homeless.
