How Tom Cruise kept Mission: Impossible at the top of the action genre for 30 years
A still from Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning

Intricate plot and impactful storytelling, that’s what makes Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible  at the top of the action genre. In a world where the entertainment landscape is constantly evolving, one man has pulled off the most impossible mission: consistency.

Tom Cruise, now 62 and showing no signs of slowing down, is preparing to don the gloves, gear, and grit of Ethan Hunt one last time with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. It’s the closing chapter of a 30-year-long saga that has redefined the action genre across generations.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

When _Mission: Impossible_ first hit screens in 1996, it was a slick spy thriller directed by Brian De Palma, full of thrill, tension and espionage. At the time, however, no one would’ve predicted that a film, ambitious in scale and vision, would serve as the cornerstone of a franchise that would outlast trends and time.

Uniqueness of Mission: Impossible franchise

What makes the Mission: Impossible franchise so unique is that it doesn’t age with time; it escalates - the stakes, the stunts, the scale, everything. Cruise and his team have leaned harder into realism and authenticity, often risking life and limb for that perfect, jaw-dropping shot. By doing this, Cruise has not just made action sequences memorable - he’s made them milestones. Whether it be hanging from a moving airplane in Rogue Nation, the Burj Khalifa in Ghost Protocol, or the now iconic HALO jump in Fallout, Cruise has made it clear: the audience will always know when it’s real. Today, Mission: Impossible stands apart as an original, evolving, and thrilling spectacle that commands attention with each release.

Masterclass in character continuity

Beyond the spectacle, however, lies a masterclass in character continuity. In addition to being a spy, Ethan Hunt has come to represent loyalty, relentless pursuit and self-sacrifice. Over time, Cruise has stripped him of invincibility and added vulnerability, giving audiences not just an action hero, but a human one.

The franchise also reflects Cruise’s own development. Once the young hotshot in sunglasses, he’s now the veteran, wiser but no less daring. And maybe that’s the secret: Cruise never allowed the franchise to stagnate. He treated each film like the last — pouring in sweat, precision, and passion to each.

Is it the final mission

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

With The Final Reckoning, the stakes aren’t just high for Ethan Hunt. If this truly is the final mission, then it stands to be a curtain call on not just a character, but an era — an ode to practical filmmaking, blockbuster ambition, and the undying spirit of one of Hollywood’s most determined stars. This chapter promises not only edge-of-the-seat thrills but also a deeply emotional journey that brings decades of legacy to a full circle.

The film makes its way to cinemas in India on 23rd May in English, Hindi, Tamil & Telugu in IMAX !
