Hindi cinema has seen some massive commercial failures in its otherwise glorious history, right from Bombay Velvet to Ganapath. But the one film that turned out to be a much bigger disappointment at the box-office was Arjun Kapoor-Bhumi Pednekar’s ‘The Lady Killer’. It came out last year and sank without a trace.

The film that opened in cinemas on November 3 had a severely limited release of merely 50 screens. A report by Bollywood Hungama says only 500 people turned up to watch it, and it collected around Rs 38,000 on day one. It’s directed by Section 375 fame Ajay Bahl.

What happened?

Bollywood Hungama reports, “Over 10 days of shoot was pending, and producers decided to stall the shoot because the film was over budget. They have played smartly on the edit table to make sense of all the stuff that was shot. The film is being released only because a digital deal is locked and the same has to be delivered to their digital partner post-theatrical release.”

Reason behind the minimal release

“The OTT players are giving lucrative monies to producers. Now the contracts are signed and to get the money, the film has to be released on the big screen. The idea is to be smart on the edit by adding relevant voiceovers for missing portions and release the film to book the revenue,” a source told the portal.

It continued, “It’s going to release on minimal screens just to make up for the OTT clause of theatrical release.”
