‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ movie review- Chris Hemsworth & Anya Taylor Joy’s film deserves the big screen experience

Cast: Anya-Taylor Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Nathan Jones

Director: George Miller

Language: English

It’s getting strange to see how filmmakers pat their own backs when they share the trailers of their new films. Three names come to mind from the Hindi film industry- Ajay Devgn, Vivek Agnihotri, and Ahmed Khan. And from Hollywood, the recent name that pops up is George Miller, who calls himself a mastermind behind the Mad Max franchise. He made the first film all the way back in 1979 and 45 years later, he’s still harping on the series which shows his scathing commitment to the world he created and envisioned ages ago. So for him, mastermind is actually a right word. His new film is called Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Miller, who with Byron Kennedy started the _Mad Max_ franchise starring Mel Gibson in 1979, said he was grateful to shoot the film in his home country, thanks to financial support from the state and federal governments. Miller said he was also excited by the role an Australian film boom was playing in the nation’s recovery from the pandemic back in 2021.

His new film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga serves as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury (2015) and retains the scale and style of the same. It’s about the survival of the eponymous character in a landscape where monsters have taken over and humans are being wiped out. A black-and-white shot gets into the color mode as the girl in question plucks an apple. The way Miller shoots the scene, it’s nothing but his idea of showing how danger is lurking for this heroic girl. And Anya Taylor-Joy breathes fire into this scorching role that will stop at no end to eliminate what eliminated the one that was closest to her.

And Chris Hemsworth is having the time of his life playing what remains one of his most despicable and delightful characters, thy name is Dementus, the warlord leader of the Biker Horde which abducted Furiosa. Hemsworth said being involved in such a project in his homeland (Australia) was a dream come true. “This will be my fourth or fifth film here in Australia,” the Thor star said in Sydney. “It really is, out of everything I’ve done, the biggest pinch-myself moment, because I’ve grown up watching it and it’s so iconic,” Hemsworth said.

And adding adrenaline to the actors’ fiery performances is cinematographer Simon Duggan, who also compliments the gargantuan vision of the mastermind that was referred to above. The sprawling shots deserve the big screen experience even though the plot is threadbare. What makes the film a lot more fun is the eccentricities of the villains. They are as conniving as they are cartoonish, and as entertaining as they are evil.

For all those who are gratified by grandeur, Furiosa: Mad Max Saga is worth the price of your tickets. For those who derive pleasure out of dense plot and narrative, try for another saga.
