Former Doordarshan news reader Sarla Maheshwari dies at 71: All about her life, career and legacy

Former Doordarshan news reader Sarla Maheshwari, one of the most recognised faces of Indian television news during the 1980s and 1990s, passed away on Thursday in Delhi. She was 71. The news of her demise was confirmed by her family friend and former co-anchor Shammi Narang.

Maheshwari served as a news reader on Doordarshan from 1976 to 2005, playing a pivotal role in shaping television news in India during a time when broadcasting was limited to just a few hours a day.

Shammi Narang announces her demise

Shammi Narang, who co-anchored news bulletins with Maheshwari, took to X and Instagram to announce the sad news. Expressing his grief, he wrote, “I feel utmost grief in announcing the sad demise of my ex co-News anchor at Doordarshan, Sarala Maheshwari.”

Remembering her warmth and personality, he added, “She was the embodiment of grace and courtesy.” In another emotional post, Narang wrote, “Beautiful not just in appearance but even more so at heart, she had a remarkable command over language and was a reservoir of knowledge. Her presence on the Doordarshan screen had a unique aura. She respected everyone and uplifted every space she was part of.”

Last rites to be held in Delhi

According to the family, Sarla Maheshwari’s last rites will be performed at Nigam Bodh Ghat in Delhi at 4 pm on Thursday.

A pioneer of Indian television news

Maheshwari joined the public broadcaster after completing her PhD at Delhi University. Over a career spanning nearly three decades, she witnessed and contributed to the transformation of Indian television news, including the shift from black-and-white to colour broadcasts.

She was widely admired for her clear diction, calm presence, dignified presentation, and precise pronunciation, which made her a trusted and familiar voice in millions of Indian households.

Doordarshan pays heartfelt tribute

Doordarshan National also paid tribute to the veteran news reader in a post on X, calling her an integral part of the broadcaster’s legacy.

“A heartfelt tribute from the Doordarshan family to Smt. Sarla Maheshwari. She was a respected and esteemed newsreader of Doordarshan, who carved out a special place in the Indian news world with her gentle voice, precise pronunciation, and dignified presentation. Her simplicity, restraint, and personality established deep trust in the hearts of viewers,” the post read.

Sarla Maheshwari leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of the pioneers of Indian television news. Her composed screen presence, linguistic finesse, and professional integrity continue to be remembered fondly by colleagues, viewers, and generations of broadcasters who followed in her footsteps.
