American actress and director Olivia Wilde was one of the speakers at the ongoing Red Sea International Film Festival 2024. Wilde spoke about what inspired her to be a filmmaker while growing up in a household of journalists.
She said, “There’s nothing as interesting as the truth. But in order to get an idea across, the power of fictional storytelling is obviously massive. We can communicate complex ideas with people that break through. I think of how the Twilight Zone series was born. People don’t want to watch tv shows about politics, they want to watch tv shows about science fiction. They want to see stories about abusive power.”
Wilde added, “I love the idea of using fictional storytelling to get ideas across that audience. Also, my mother was breaking through the world of journalism that was and still is heavily dominated by men, so I was raised with the idea of embracing the impossible. My parents and grandparents were journalists, cousins, brother, everyone. I was lucky enough to grow to the parents that worked all over the world.”
On wanting to become a filmmaker
And across the world, some wonderful things were happening and some terrible things were happening. So I was exposed to the geopolitical things from a pretty young age. I was always exposed to an international community. It was not only in our homes but also in school since many languages were being spoken. I wanted to explore the world, I wanted to learn about the different cultures.
And since they were journalists, the idea of telling stories and making sure you’re communicating to broad bunch of people, something you feel they need to know about, that was something that was there in my blood. I also grew up with an editing room in our basement because my parents were making documentaries. I would often go there and lay down on the carpet. I always wanted to make my own films and learn how to edit and how to write. For many young women, when we love movies as little girls we are told we should be actresses. When little boys love movies, people say they should be directors.
