Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj is one of the speakers at the ongoing IFFI in Goa, and the discussion that happened with the maverick was about the growing reliance of Artificial Intelligence in the entertainment industry, both in music and movies. The director and music composer spoke at The Annual Lata Mangeshkar Memorial Talk at IFFI, titled The Rhythms of India.
Vishal Bhardwaj opened up saying, “We shouldn’t be scared of it. And we shouldn’t discard it either. Because I remember, when I was young, and when computers were being replaced, when we used to go to book tickets in the train, after standing in the queue for an hour, we used to find out that, oh no, now the waiting list number is 1. And you are standing in the queue for 1.5 hours.”
He added, “When all these computers started changing, I remember there was a movement that all these people will be destroyed, computers will remove everyone. Now can we think life without computers? So, we can’t think. Because you can’t fight progress.”
When Vishal Bhardwaj spoke about Gulzar
Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar have given some classic collaborations to Hindi cinema. At the Mumbai Conclave 2023, he spoke about his admiration for the veteran poet and writer and how he thinks the ‘Haider’ director is a fraud. He said, “ Gulzar sahab is more than my soulmate. He’s like a tree and we all are his branches. often tells me that I exploit Shakespeare’s name to my advantage and that I am a fraud.
He said, “If you are calling it Hamlet, where is the tragedy of Hamlet?’ Vishal Bhardwaj added, “My first instinct was that maybe Gulzar sahab is outdated, and he is not able to see what I am trying to do with this film. Later, when my ego came down, I realised that he is actually right. The tragedy of Hamlet, which is so strong, affects us so severely, and that is when Haider happened.”
