Filmmaker Hansal Mehta is all set for one of his most ambitious projects yet with the release of his show Gandhi that stars Pratik Gandhi in the lead. The show will have its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival but Mehta is yet to get his Canada visa.

Mehta tweeted- “Can anybody help with visas at the Canadian High Commission in Delhi? We’re 10 days away from our world premiere at TIFF2025 and no sign of our visas. It’s nearly 3 weeks since we sent our passports.”

About Gandhi

The filmmaker wrote, “An audacious dream, born of belief and perseverance, now steps onto the world stage. Gandhi will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2025 as part of its carefully curated PrimeTime slate. The first Indian series ever to be featured at TIFF. In its 50th year, this festival becomes the home for a story that is at once deeply personal and profoundly universal. A moment of pride. A moment of memory. A quiet revolution begins.”

“Gandhi”, the upcoming series directed by Hansal Mehta, will follow India’s struggle for independence while providing an in-depth portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi at different stages in his life, says producer Sameer Nair, comparing the show’s narrative depth to the acclaimed international series “The Crown”.

Nair, the managing director of Applause Entertainment, said while Gandhi is a globally recognised figure, the show seeks to present a “deeply personal story” that goes beyond his iconic status.

“When (Richard) Attenborough made ‘Gandhi’ he had only two and a half hours to make it and he ended up making a story about Gandhi via a narrow lens. What we are hoping to do with this is to also tell the story of the Indian independence and there are so many other characters involved. Nair said they are planning to make the show into three seasons.
