Vinod Khanna was one of the biggest stars of his time, but destiny had a different plan for him. The actor joined the Osho Ashram back in 1975. Film historian Dilip Thakur recently opened up regarding the late superstar and his impact on Bollywood during a recent conversation with The Times of India. According to Dilip Thakur, Vinod Khanna’s biggest asset was his personality. He added that his success lay in his walk, “Vinod Khanna walked like a stallion.” He added that only Vinod Khanna and Raaj Kumar had a great walk. Vinod Khanna’s comeback Recalling an interaction with Ranjit, Dilip Thakur revealed that when Vinod Khanna decided to make a comeback to films, many from the industry extended their support and Ranjit was the one who cast him in Kaarnama. He added that during the time of Vinod Khanna’s comeback, Ranjit used to come with him to his residence in Bombay’s Walkeshwar multiple times. According to Dilip Thakur, Vinod Khanna did not feel the burn of making a comeback as people welcomed him with open arms. The film historian further stated that Vinod Khanna had only one major issue on the film sets and it was coming late. The Vinod Khanna vs Amitabh Bachchan debate Dilip Thakur further added that there was an ongoing debate at the time regarding who is the superstar - Vinod Khanna or Amitabh Bachchan. The film historian stated that there were a lot of members from the industry, audience and media who felt that if Vinod Khanna had not taken on the spiritual path and left the industry, he would have been one of the biggest competitors of Amitabh Bachchan.
Dilip said, “People often compared who is the superstar, Vinod Khanna or Amitabh Bachchan? In that comparison, Amitabh Bachchan moved ahead. At that time, a lot of people from within the industry, audience and media were of the opinion that if Vinod Khanna hadn’t taken the spiritual path and left the industry, he could have been a great competitor to Amitabh Bachchan. But in my opinion, Amitabh Bachchan had more versatility than Vinod Khanna.”
However, Dilip Thakur said that according to him, Amitabh Bachchan had more versatility than Vinod Khanna. The Kranti star looked like a misfit when it came to songs as Vinod Khanna did not have the dance moves. For the unversed, Vinod Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan were seen sharing the screen on several occasions such as Parvarish, Amar Akbar Anthony, Hera Pheri, Insaaf and Reshma, to name just a few. When Vinod Khanna attended Rajesh Khanna’s funeral Dilip Thakur also remembered that when Rajesh Khanna left for his heavenly abode, Vinod Khanna was visibly disturbed as he paid his last respects.
