Edited excerpts from the interview

How would you describe the character of Victor ? Because he has a pill for every ghost.

(Laughs). I think he has a tattoo for every ghost for sure. Every tattoo on his body is a memory of any ghost interaction that he’s had before. But Victor Jacob as a ghost hunter has just been quite a unique experience for me. I’ve enjoyed every bit of it.

Most of the people say that the horror movies the Ramsay Brothers made in the seventies and the eighties, they have not aged well. So is there a trick to make sure that a horror film ages well?

They were correct for their time because no one else attempted that thing. So we have to give respect to the Ramsay Brothers for making that kind of cinema, and they were stupendously successful, and they made some great entertaining ones with the kind of resources that were available. Let’s understand that the resources are very important. Today’s filmmakers are able to do that with the kind of VFX, with the kind of makeup. I don’t think they were able to make movies with A-list star cast then. But today, A-list stars like Akshay Kumar or Ajay Devgn are attempting the genre. So it gives a lot of wind below the wings for the directors to expand is what I feel.

Since we spoke about the cinema of the seventies and the eighties and the discussion is about comedy, how much do you miss the brand of Kader Khan’s cinema? Because you have always spoken about your fondness for him, and I remember you said in an interview you always wanted to meet him, and you finally did when you felicitated him. So do you feel the industry will ever have a writer, a legend like Kader Khan ever again?

You know, there are some people that are just made once and he is one of them. A legendary writer, fantastic actor, and, we remember him for comedies, but he has written dialogues for iconic films. If I’m not wrong, I think films like Amar Akbar Anthony and Coolie were written by him. He is also someone who had immense grasp over languages. I remember one of his interviews he gave where he said if one could understand earthy humour, he could understand any humour. His films reflected middle-class values. So I I mean, there will be other people having their own uniqueness, but, there’ll be none like him.

Your one takeaway from Kakuda

We shot this a few years ago. But now, I want to do the film again.
