Set against the blood-soaked backdrop of West Bengal’s violent political past, The Bengal Files dares to ask the questions no one has the courage to answer. In an interview with Firstpost, Pallavi Joshi talks about the film, The Bengal Files and the controversy around Gopal Patha, the man who saved Calcutta.
Talking about his grandson questioning the mis-representation of Gopal Patha in _The Bengal Files_ , Pallavi Joshi says, “I think he is also scared like Saswata Chatterjee because Gopal Patha’s grandson also has a connection with TMC. That has been an issue with every single FIR that has been filed.”
“The other thing is there is this mis-conception that the film is based on Gopal Patha, but that is not the case," adds Pallavi. She further added, “The film isn’t based on him. He is just one of the characters. He was called the butcher of Bengal. In the movie you will get to see the incident of Direct Action Day. There was mass killing of the Hindus to change the demography. So, Calcutta as it was known back in the day, became a part of East Pakistan. So, that was the politics behind it. And then Gopal Patha emerged as a hero because he started saving the Hindus. It was known as the Great Calcutta Killing because so many people from both sides died. And if it wasn’t for Gopal Patha we would have lost Calcutta to East Pakistan. So, he is a hero and that’s exactly what we have shown in the film.”
