Real-life Sunil Kumar Gupta is against the death sentence. In an interview with Firstpost, he questions why Surendra Koli of the Nithari Killing case was set free even after killing so many kids. Just because he could afford to hire an advocate to fight his case.
He also talks about his experience with Charles Sobraj and how Ranga and Billa conduct in jail was excellent and how they used to do all jobs allotted to them peacefully.
Edited excerpts from the interview:
In Netflix and Applause Entertainment’s _Black Warrant_ , we see that you are against the death sentence of Ranga and Billa. Were you sympathetic to them? Why so?
I am against the death sentence because mostly this is given to poor prisoners who are marginalised because they can’t get good advocates to fight their cases, so they are hanged.
I would advise them to give longer prison terms, say 30 to 40 years or even 50 years.
Even in the Nirbhaya case I was against the death sentence. In my experience as a jailer I have seen that the death sentence is given to poor people who cannot afford a private advocate. See Surendra Koli is out after killing dozens of people because he could afford a lawyer.
Why do you believe that criminals can be reformed?
Criminals can be reformed, but it is difficult. I would say only 2 to 3 percent of criminals do’t have an inclination to get reformed. The important tool for reforming them is to make them educated. We have open school and distance education in jail from where the prisoners are passing their 10th and 12th standard exams and even their graduation and post-graduation exams. First is education, second is vocational courses. This helps them in building up confidence, so when they are released they can earn their livelihood by honest means.
We had also introduced yoga, meditation and sports. We encourage prisoners to participate in these activities because we believe that only a healthy body can keep a healthy mind.
You seemed to have a great relation with Charles Sobhraj as we can make out from the Netflix show, just curious why so? How was his behaviour in jail?
He was a very smart fellow. When I first visited the jail, I used to see this man to be very well dressed. Prisoners are allowed to wear their own clothes when someone comes to visit them. And most of the time, he had visitors from outside and they were mostly females.
He helped me in joining as a jailer. He helped in typing replies for several cases. He was smart and good looking and had women visitors in jail who were mostly journalists and advocates.
But he was ruthless. He used to have rave parties in Goa with women, add sedatives in their drinks, then rape, loot and even kill them.
