In an exclusive interview with Firstpost for Not Just Bollywood, Deepak Dobriyal talks about his role as a cop in Netflix’s Sector 36 and how his role is different from the regular cops that we have seen so far.
Based on a true story, Netflix’s _Sector 36_ , the film is not for the weak hearts. The plot of the Netflix original movie, Sector 36, is based on the Nithari Killings case in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, which shook the soul of the nation in 2006. Both Vikrant Massey and Deepak Dobriyal revisit this real-life horror with their deeply intense performances.
Edited excerpts from the interview:
What was your preparation like for this role you have played in Netflix’s _Sector 36_ ? Did you meet any of the family members?
I did not meet any family members. The preparation was in the script itself. This is the first time I am playing a cop and this is the first time I’m doing a uniform drama. All the clichés and images of cops that we have seen in Hindi cinema, from Dharmendra to Ajay Devgn to Salman Khan to Akshay Kumar, these are the kind of cops we have seen so far. They are filled with machoism, but I’ve also seen cops in Delhi and Mumbai that work on a human level. They are innocent and behave like common people.
This is based on a real-life story. Did you revisit the events that happened? What did you feel after playing this cop? This is one of the most cruel cases so far.
We had revisited this story many times mentally by thinking about all the visuals possible. And that’s how the screenplay has been written. And that’s how we played the characters based on the screenplay.
When these things happen in our own homes, only then do we take responsibility. How did you transform yourself in this journey?
Every human has shades of grey. There are certain things where people cannot be honest. He’s corrupt but he has not been caught, that’s what we say Upar ki Kamai. This was a big trend in Delhi and many other places. This is something that’s happening all around us, and that’s how people get things done and they don’t think they are doing anything wrong. But when you realize the importance of truth, you come to know what you were doing was wrong. And that’s when he begins to sacrifice things
How was your experience working with Vikrant Massey ?
It was too good. He’s an amazing, detailed and involved actor, and I also enjoy working with such actors. The way he has performed and his perspective was commendable. He’s a sensible actor. You can see his commitment in films like 12th Fail and A Death In The Gunj. He’s a daring actor and I like such actors. He now plays a dark character here and mouth lines that need daring.
What’s your take on cinema changing, ever since OTT has come in?
Cinema is like a festival. You’re watching a film in a packed theatre where you enjoy with a collective euphoria. On OTT, it’s only your craft that can hold your attention. It’s a challenge for an actor and every artist to be able to hold people’s attention. OTT is a giant leap for any actor or any artist.
