The teaser of Haq is out, and Junglee Pictures makes its intent unmistakably clear this is not a film that plays safe. In today’s polarized climate, where conversations on faith, rights, and justice are often dodged, Haq chooses to confront them head-on.
Produced in association with Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios, _Haq_ is inspired by the landmark Supreme Court case of Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum. Based on journalist Jigna Vora’s book Bano: Bharat ki Beti, the film fictionalizes events from the 1980s, but the questions it raises remain just as urgent is justice equal for all?
Legal trouble for the film
Shah Bano’s daughter Siddiqua Begum’s lawyer, Tousif Z Warsi told India Today, “There is a requirement of certain addition, like Shah Bano’s personal life is depicted in the movie because it’s a long movie of two odd hours.”
He added, “We do not know what events have been disclosed, in what manner they have been reproduced, or how her personal life has been depicted. The storyline and theme of the movie must first be disclosed to her legal heirs.”
What next for the makers of Haq?
The lawyer added, while talking about Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam’s film, “A written consent should be obtained allowing the publication of Shah Bano’s biography. Without such consent, even the court would not permit the release of the film.”
“There have been previous instances where courts have stayed the release of movies over similar concerns,” he added.

The story follows Shazia Bano (Yami Gautam Dhar), who takes her husband Abbas (Emraan Hashmi) to court after he abandons her and their children. What begins as a private dispute transforms into a national flashpoint, with the courtroom becoming a battlefield of faith, law, and equality. The teaser captures this shift with raw intensity, showing a love story turning into a fight for justice.
