Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar, may not have earned the praise of critics because of its content, but it is certainly being appreciated by authorities. Image via Tiwtter[/caption] While the film was termed as being propagandist as reviewers thought it focused too much on the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and PM Narendra Modi governance (including a dream sequence with a cow, and multiple references to demonetisation), it was declared tax-free in Uttar Pradesh. Not just this, Kumar was also declared the brand ambassador of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in the state. Now, the minister of panchayats and development in Haryana OP Dhankar said that this film should be shown to all the panches and sarpanches in the state, reports The New Indian Express. On 16 August, he issued directions for all district development and panchayat officers (DDPOs) to arrange for the screenings, in an attempt to sensitise Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs). The film has also received recognition from the United Nations, which shared a video that talks about how Toilet: Ek Prem Katha addresses the issue of open defecation.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha has earned a total of Rs 89.95 crore at the box office since its release on 11 August. The film crossed Rs 50 crores over the weekend, and got a major boost from its earnings on Tuesday, which was Independence Day. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the films earnings, inclusive of Wednesday’s numbers. It is expected to cross the Rs 100 crore-mark.
