Whenever we see or read that the film is inspired by or based on a true story or event, it automatically creates curiosity among us as an audience to know about the untold and unexplored narrative. The story of Bandaa Singh Chaudhary is one of those, which has been lost in history despite his worthy contribution to mankind.
The plot of Bandaa Singh Chaudhary is set in Punjab, North India, where we see a critical situation arising after the 1971 war, which created Bangladesh. Set between 1975 to 1984, a farmer from the village named Bandaa Singh Chaudhary ( Arshad Warsi ) falls head over heals with Lalli (Meher Vij) and the duo get married and later gets blessed with a baby girl.
Simultaneously, the rise of militants is high in the Punjab area, who are threatening and killing non-Sikhs (Hindus) to leave the state. The proclaimed revolutionaries now threaten Bandaa and order him along with his family to leave Punjab. However, Bandaa resists and says that he belongs to this village and won’t leave.
The militants now warn neighbours and everyone around Bandaa to stop talking to his family or they will be killed. This leaves Bandaa and his family aloof in the village. However, Bandaa’s best friend and neighbour Tajinder comes to meet him and says their friendship and village have been affected by the evil eye.
However, the militants come to know that Tajinder has met Bandaa and kill him. After this Bandaa leaves the village with his family. Will he come back to the village? Will the villagers accept his family? Will they all come together to fight against the militants? Well, to know that you have to watch Bandaa Singh Chaudhary on the big screen.
Director Abhishek Saxena deserves kudos for narrating this untold story and adding all the necessary emotional elements.
Talking about the performances, Arshad Warsi, who has been featured in a never-seen-before avatar, has managed to deliver a notable performance. Meher Vij as Lalli is simply great and her equation with Arshad is admirable. The rest of the cast including Shataf Figar, Shilpi Marwaha, Jeeveshu Ahluwalia and Alisha Chopra have done their parts well. Kiara Khanna of Hi Nanna fame, who played Arshad and Meher’s daughter, steals the show with her cuteness.
On the whole, Bandaa Singh Chaudhary deserves appreciation for narrating the untold part of history.
