Right from celebrity shelves to Wimbledon sightings, Labubu dolls have taken the world by storm. However, a recent claim has gone viral, which links these dolls to the ancient demon Pazuzu. This claim has garnered confusion among the audience about whether the labubus are mischief-filled toys or something sinister.
This theory began when an Instagram user shared a video featuring a brown Labubu doll beside an image of Pazuzu and warned users with the caption, “Do not buy this demonic toy for your children or yourself!”
This post garnered further traction after a video clip from The Simpsons (Season 29, Episode 4) showed Marge buying a figurine, thinking a pizza-themed toy and gifting her baby, which turned out to be a Pazuzu demon toy, which causes possession.
This reference fueled widespread misinformation about the Labubu dolls.
Kasing Lung, a Hong Kong-born cartoonist, was the man behind the creation as he made it in 2015. It was inspired by European fairytales from his childhood in the Netherlands, he introduced the character as part of his illustrated book series titled The Monsters. He said that Labubu lives in his soul and was never intended to be evil.
Lung collaborated with China-based Pop Mart in 2019 to turn these fantasy characters into collectable toys, which turned out to be a global phenomenon.
Apart from fans, celebs like Kim Kardashian, BLACKPINK’s Lisa, Dua Lipa, Rihanna and Indian stars like Ananya Panday, Pashmina Roshan, Sharvari Wagh and Twinkle Khanna were seen flaunting Labubu collectibles.
