Anurag Kashyap endorses uncensored digital release of Manmarziyaan: The medium offers liberty in storytelling
Many of Anurag Kashyap's films have been embroiled in censorship controversies with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). With his latest Manmarziyaan, the director found himself in a similar scenario even days after the release of the romantic drama featuring Vicky Kaushal, Taapsee Pannu and Abhishek Bachchan.
Manmarziyaan's uncensored version is soon to release on Eros Now, the censorship-free web platform and Kashyap thereby has enough reason to celebrate. Talking about the issue, the director recently opened up. Kashyap stated that it was great to see his product in its original and complete form. "I have always advocated for a censorship-free [platform], and the digital medium offers that liberty in storytelling." added Kashyap.
The select scenes (initially deleted following protests after release of Manmarziyaan) will be available on Eros Now. The protests claimed that certain scenes were disrespectful toward a few Sikh groups. Following the film's release on 14 September, the groups conducted protests in Delhi and Punjab, and filed a police complaint with the Jammu district magistrate.
Owing to the agitation, the Censor board deleted scenes from the film. Two of those scenes depict Abhishek Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu (who portrayed Sikh characters) smoke cigarettes.
The uncensored version is set to launch on Eros Now on 12 December.
