Ranya Rao, the Kannada actress who happens to be the stepdaughter of senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer K. Ramachandra Rao was arrested at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence recently. She was accused of smuggling gold worth Rs 12 crore.
But how was the actress able to smuggle gold amid her arrest and cross the green channel? The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence’s arrest memo has revealed shocking details.
Now her husband has decided to file for divorce. In a statement, he said, “Since the day we got married, I have been enduring pain and distress. Today, I have made the decision to file for divorce,” as quoted by Times Now.
“Attempting to pass through the Green Channel, she denied carrying any dutiable goods, gold, or contraband. However, a metal detector alerted officers to the presence of concealed items on her person,” the memo read.
“A government-approved valuer certified the purity and value, and the items were seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962,” the memo added.
Multiple reports say she broke down in front of her lawyers and said, “I constantly reflect on why I became involved in this. My thoughts revert to the day at the airport. I am unable to sleep… I am experiencing mental distress.”
Now, it’s a troubling time for both the actress and her stepfather.
To put it simply, two separate investigations have been ordered to uncover the extent of security lapses and potential involvement of police personnel. Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is now going to be looking into the matter. More details about the case are awaited.
