'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' Series Episode 1 Review: This prequel to 'Game of Thrones' looks intense and intriguing

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms kicks off its journey into Westeros with Episode 1, titled “The Hedge Knight”, now streaming on JioHotstar, with new episodes releasing every Monday in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. Set nearly a century before the events of Game of Thrones, the series offers a refreshing, character-driven take on George R. R. Martin’s world, focusing on honour, friendship, and the making of an unlikely hero.

_Game Of Thrones_ has a cult following and the massively popular show also enjoys massive memes on social media. So anything to do with the legacy of the sweeping and ambitious show ought to live up. So instead of taking the story ahead, we go back in time, and that too centuries behind. The frames are still as gorgeous and the humour dark and understated. Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (“Dunk”) at first behaves like a headless chicken, trying to process the things around him with some help from the company of his three horses.

A Gentler Entry Into Westeros
From its opening moments, the episode establishes a clear tonal shift. Westeros feels quieter and more intimate, moving away from palace intrigue and large-scale conflicts to explore the everyday lives of knights and common folk. The focus is on small choices and personal codes, setting the stage for a story rooted in humanity rather than power.

Dunk’s Humble Beginning

The premiere opens on a somber note as Ser Duncan the Tall, known simply as Dunk, buries his mentor Ser Arlan of Pennytree. With no lands, no title of consequence, and a knighthood granted on a deathbed, Dunk is left with little more than borrowed armour and a strong sense of duty. His decision to enter the tournament at Ashford Meadow marks the first step in his journey toward becoming a true knight.

The Arrival of Egg

One of the episode’s most charming turns comes with the introduction of Egg, a bald, sharp-tongued boy with striking indigo eyes. Dunk meets him at an inn, where Egg insists on becoming his squire. Though reluctant, Dunk agrees, unaware that this outspoken child carries secrets that could reshape Westeros itself. Their dynamic adds warmth, humour, and mystery to the narrative.

A Hero Defined by Honour, Not Power

Unlike many figures in the _Game of Thrones_ universe, Dunk isn’t driven by ambition or legacy. A former orphan from Flea Bottom, he believes deeply in fairness, loyalty, and protecting the vulnerable. Episode one presents him as earnest and grounded, showing the early signs of the legendary knight he is destined.

A New Kind of Westeros Story

“The Hedge Knight” closes with a sense of promise rather than impending danger. By prioritising character, companionship, and quiet courage, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms sets itself apart as a more intimate and heartfelt chapter in the world of Westeros.

The only thing that bothers is the decision to drop one episode every week that snatches the joy of binge-watching such a gargantuan show. You have to wait for full seven days to know what’s going to happen next. But it also kind of seduces you to be glued to your seats when a new episode comes out. The show has been divided between two directors, the other one being Sarah Adina Smith. Four eyes and one vision- Let’s see how it goes.
