With the entertainment world shifting gears in its approach toward female characters in films, many actresses have taken centre stage to depict a story through the women’s lens. This significant change has resulted in more number of women-centric films being made to break stereotypes.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day on Friday, March 8, here we have compiled a list of a few women-centric films depicting the inspiring stories of strong and resilient characters.
Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway
Ashima Chibber’s _Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway_ emerged as one of the most critically successful films released in 2023. Starring Rani Mukerji in the lead role, the film delved deep into the life of a mother who takes up a legal fight against Norway’s government in a bid to get her children’s custody back who was wrongfully taken from her. The film beautifully portrayed that a mother can go to any extent to safeguard her children.
Gangubai Kathiawadi
One cannot miss Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi while naming women-centric films. Based on the real-life story of Gangubai Kothewali, the film had Alia Bhatt playing a role that will be remembered for years. Based on Hussain Zaidi’s novel Mafia Queens of Mumbai, the film narrated how Gangubai was pushed into prostitution but she rose to become a voice for sex workers. Released in 2022, the film won many accolades for its intriguing screenplay, direction, and Alia’s acting skills.
Ghoomer
Another film that needs attention for its presentation of a resilient woman is Ghoomer, a sports drama that features Saiyami Kher and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead roles. Saiyami, in the film directed by R Balki, loses her arm but still manages to fulfil her dreams as she becomes a paraplegic cricketer. Queen
Headlined by Kangana Ranaut, the film also has talented Rajkummar Rao playing a pivotal role. Queen revolves around Rani Mehra whose life takes an unexpected turn after her fiancé calls off their wedding just days before the ceremony. Disheartened by his decision, Rani embarks on a new journey to find her independence and goes on her honeymoon trip to Paris and Amsterdam alone. In Paris, she is joined by Vijayalakshmi, who introduces her to a world of new experiences.
English Vinglish
Starring the late legendary actress, Sridevi appeared in this impactful film to portray a housewife who wishes to explore her capabilities. Sridevi played Sashi in the film who devoted her entire life to her family but is insecure about her inability to understand English. Following a situation at a close relative’s wedding, she goes to New York all by herself and tries to learn a new language discovering where her true happiness lies.
