If you’ve always wanted to see the world and believed that a career in the travel industry might be the perfect fit to help satiate your wanderlust, think again.
A recent report from the World Travel and Tourism Council titled ‘Economic Impact of Travel & Tourism 2014’ states that though, in 2013, the sector directly supported 22,320,000 jobs (4.9 percent of total employment in India), jobs growth in the travel and tourism sector in India is expected to rise by a meagre 2.1 percent per year to 28,081,000 jobs by 2024.
That caps the employment share of the sector in the Indian economy at a mere 5.1 percent, substantially lower than the nearly 5.4 percent share of total employment the travel and tourism sector enjoyed in 2008 – a level the sector is unlikely to see again, according to the WTTC projections.
In other words, jobs growth will be relatively poor. That’s a tragedy, especially since India’s natural diversity offers tremendous potential for the travel and tourism sector.
It is estimated that around 10 million to 12 million new young people will enter India’s labour market each year over the next decade. India will increasingly need to find ways to boost employment levels.
Meanwhile, those of you into travel, it’s time to start looking at other career options.
