The international survey, conducted across 19 countries and 21 cities by Ipsos MarketQuest and supported by eye-lens maker Essilor, was aimed at identifying safe cities in the world from the point of taxi drivers’ vision.

Among cab drivers wearing spectacles in Delhi, more than two-thirds had not got their eyes tested for a long time while several others had prescriptions which were either very old or incorrect, the survey said.

While globally 15 per cent of taxi drivers, who are not wearing spectacles, needed vision correction– this number was 21 per cent in Mumbai and a staggering 49 per cent in Delhi, the survey added.

Other major participating cities include New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Paris, London and Moscow.

2,126 drivers operating on the roads of these cities were interviewed including 102 in Mumbai and 101 in Delhi and were subjected to vision tests.
