Hyper connected: Ahmedabad teenagers lead country in Facebook usage

The ‘GenY survey’ was done by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) across 14 Indian cities, including Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indore, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur and Pune, with a total base of 18,196 high school students of 12-18 age group. The sample size of Ahmedabad was around 1,100 respondents.

Hyper connected: Ahmedabad teenagers lead country in Facebook usage

Ahmedabad: As per a latest ‘GenY Survey’ done by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) across 14 Indian cities, Ahmedabad’s school-going teenagers emerged as ‘hyper connected’, as they topped the charts in using Facebook to stay connected with their friends and relatives.

The survey concluded that Facebook usage in Ahmedabad city by teenagers is among the highest in the country.

More than 94 percent teenagers out of 1,100-odd respondents in the age group of 12-18 in Ahmedabad claimed that they are having a Facebook account.

This is far more than the national average of 85.97 percent. Suprisingly, Facebook usage of city teens is higher than metro cities like Mumbai and Delhi, which remained at 85.14 percent.

Besides Facebook, city teens also topped the charts across the nation in using other social media platforms, such as Google+ and LinkedIn.

The ‘GenY survey’ was done by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) across 14 Indian cities, including Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indore, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur and Pune, with a total base of 18,196 high school students of 12-18 age group. The sample size of Ahmedabad was around 1,100 respondents.

Just like social media usage, city teens are also ahead in using latest gadgets, as almost all claim to own some kind of gadget to remain ‘social’.

Among all respondents from the city, 95.12 percent claim to have own a mobile phone, much higher than national average of 86.68 percent and metro average of 82.43 percent.

At least 75.94 percent of the city respondents claimed to be using home computers, which is also higher than metro average of 61.28 percent and 71.62 percent average of mini-metro cities.

In the frequency of posting comments, photos or videos, city teens also emerged as hyper active. As per the survey, 26.18 percent respondents claimed that they post on Facebook everyday, which is ahead of national average of 21.94 percent and metro average of 21.44 percent.

City teens are also ahead in making friends on Facebook, as 73.09 percent respondents claim to have more than 120 Facebook friends, which is far more than national average of 53.09 per cent and metro average of 46.96 per cent.

The survey also gave some insight into what is trending in the social media and gadget usage scenario in major cities of India. The survey also claimed that cyber cafes are now “extinct” in metros.

Commenting on the findings of the survey, Executive Vice President and Global HR head of TCS Ajoy Mukherjee said that tomorrow’s professionals will be socially active, highly adaptable to new technologies and extremely aware of the world around them.

“Our annual survey of high-school students shows that urban teenagers are adopting new social platforms quickly, using them in multiple ways and leading the way in driving change,” Mukherjee said.
