Last year was one of the biggest years for Bollywood. Not only was it symbolical by being the centenary year of Bollywood, but with Gangs of Wasseypur, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and other such films breaking records, Bollywood broke the age-old theory of ‘only masala works’.
With Chennai Express, Krrish 3 and Dhoom: 3, the Rs 100 crore club expanded to the Rs 200 crore club this year. Dhoom: 3 also became the fastest film to earn Rs 100 cr, making Rs 107.61 cr in just three days.
Even the Rs 100 crore club had more members this year and saw as many as five films - Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Farhan Akhtar’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela and Grand Masti.
Buoyed by the hefty returns on investment the tinsel town saw last year, production houses have loosened their purse strings to bring more mega-budget releases which started Jai Ho. However, the Salman Khan starrer could not grab too many eyeballs. Made on a heavy budget of Rs 120 crore, the movie has been able to collect only Rs 102 crore in three weeks.
But then this is just the beginning to what may possibly be a bigger year for Bollywood.
Here’s a look at the 10 big releases of last year and how much moolah they raked in (The figures have been collected from production houses):
