Billionaire Infosys co-founder and face of “Aadhaar” programme Nandan Nilekani formally joined the Congress yesterday, a day after he was made a party candidate for Bangalore South Lok Sabha constituency.
Nilekani was a co-founder of Infosys. He quit his high profile job in July 2009 to head the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) project. The project, which issues identity cards to all who resides in India, has been controversial as critics see it as an invasion of privacy.
In Bangalore South, Nilekani will be taking on the BJP’s Ananth Kumar, who has been an unchallenged king, winning the seat five times. And no doubt, Nilekani is bracing himself up for the tough fight. It is a baptism of the political kind.
A look at this word cloud using Nilekani’s comments in media explains what is on top of his mind. Interestingly, Aadhaar, his pet project, finds little or no mention. The emphasis is on ‘change’ and ‘party.’ Need more evidence that Nilekani has become a full-fledged politician?
