Rags to riches story in Gujarat: Modi becomes a crorepati-maker

The stories of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi’s magic in the state is not new. Despite several criticisms, the Gujarat model of development is believed to be one of the best in the countries. And soon, Modi may be hailed even more for turning his state’s farmers into crorepatis.

According to a Times of India report today, the Gujarat government will soon make the farmers of a Muslim-dominated village near Sanand in Ahmedabad district rich, by acquiring 350 hectares of their land.

The government has proposed to compensate the farmers Rs 1 crore per hectare. The rate of the land has gone up nearly 25 times in the last 6 years. In 2008, when the Nano project was shifted in this village, the rate of the land was around 4 lakh per hectare, notes the report.

But the rags to riches stories are not new in Gujarat.

A week back another ToI report noted that the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation paid a hefty compensation to villagers in Khoraj, turning them crorepatis overnight. Of the 400-odd people who have been paid over Rs 1 crore for their lands, 117 are women.
