 "PowerGrid plans to add 60K km lines in 12th Plan")
Mumbai: State-run utility major PowerGrid Corporation today said it plans to increase its transmission network by over 60,000 circuit km (ckm) in the next five years.
At present, the company has a transmission network of over 82,336 ckm, including around 33,000 ckm under construction. By the end of the next Five-Year Plan (2012-17), the corporation would have an overall transmission line of around 1.5 lakh ckm.
“We plan to increase our transmission network by over 60,000 ckm by the end of the 12th Plan. We have planned a capex of Rs 1 lakh crore for the next Plan,” PGCIL Chairman and Managing Director R N Nayak told reporters here.

PowerGrid, which has an inter-regional power transfer capacity of over 23,800 MW, plans to over double the capacity in the next five years.
“We will be enhancing the current power transfer capacity by around 8,200 MW by next March. We plan to double this to nearly 65,000 MW by the end of the 12th Plan,” Nayak said, adding that “We have set a target for the entire country to be synchronously connected by 2014.”
PowerGrid had set a target of Rs 55,000 crore for its expansion plan for the 11th Plan (2007-12). “We have already raised and used over Rs 43,000 crore. The rest will be raised through equity, commercial bonds and funds by funding institutions, including World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Japan Bank for International Cooperation,” he said.
PowerGrid posted nearly 9 pecent increase in its net profit to Rs 708.74 crore for the three months ended September 30, 2011, against Rs 651.40 crore in the year-ago period.
