Goa will monitor petrol pumps on border to curb smuggling

Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has said that petrol pumps on the state’s border would be under strict checking to ensure that petrol is not smuggled out, as it is much cheaper here compared to the neighbours.

“We are monitoring the petrol pumps located at state’s borders. We will go through the data to check whether petrol is being smuggled from there,” he told reporters yesterday after swearing in of six ministers.

Parrikar said that many people who are holidaying in Goa while going back refuel their tanks of their vehicles. “We cant stop them from doing so. But we have also disallowed giving petrol in cans and barrels,” the chief minister said.

Parrikar said that there are very few vehicles which come purposely to fill petrol from across the state because it is cheaper here.

BJP-led government in its recent budget had exempted value added tax on the petrol, slashing its prices by almost Rs 11 making it cheapest in the country.

Parrikar had said that the move was to ease the inflation faced by common man. The state government had also said that they will install monitoring stations on borders to ensure that petrol is not smuggled into neighbouring state.
