Amul products may finally be hitting store shelves in the US with the factory set up there beginning production of ghee, shrikhand and paneer.
Amul Dairy’s managing director Dr K Rathnam was quoted as saying in a Times of India report that they had received approval from the Gujarat government and had started production in the US plant last week and over the next six months could start manufacturing more products at the plant.
The products are to be manufactured at a plant in New Jersey with whom Amul District Cooperative Milk Producers Union has signed a third party agreement.
The plant is reportedly owned by New Jersey-based NRI businessman Piyush Patel, who invested $9 million to set up the facility over three acres that will begin with manufacturing 50 tonnes of shrikhand, 100 tonnes of paneer and 200 tonnes of ghee per month.
Earlier reports had said that Amul would begin by selling its products in markets like New Jersey, New York and Boston, which are believed to have a significantIndian diaspora.
Amul’s hoping that theUS-made productswill be a hit with the NRI population who currently pay 20 percent more than the actual price for imported products from India.
GCMMF’s current annual exports of dairy products to US was pegged at around to Rs 35 crore and the production in the US is expected to help Amul quadruple its sales in the country.
