 "Cummins Powers Its Employees Through Oracle University")
Cummins India is a well know player in the field of engine manufacturing, not only in India but across the globe. The company has established its manufacturing facilities across India and is now in the process of expansion.
In order to handle the growth and ongoing demand for its products, Cummins India recently upgraded its ERP system with the help of Oracle. It has deployed the Oracle E Business Suite and has also taken the help of Oracle University to train its employees on the latest technologies.
Handling upcoming challenges
Cummins India was earlier using Oracle E Business Suite 11.0.3. With the growth in the business and expansion of manufacturing plants, the company decided to go for the latest version of the ERP system. It was also becoming increasingly difficult for Cummins’ ERP department to handle the growth of data and other related reports and files.
According to Sunil S Bandal, general manager, ERP Solutions, Cummins India Limited, “It was essential for our entire ERP application to upgrade to the latest version to handle the forthcoming challenges. Before going for such a large deployment, we wanted to train our employees so that the deployment process could be a smooth one. It was also very much essential for our employees to gain knowledge on the applications they would use in the future.”
Oracle scores over others
The staff at Cummins was familiar with the Oracle applications for the last six years, and that experience helped them select Oracle over others. “We evaluated TCS, Oracle and our own sister concern KPIT Cummins but decided to go for Oracle to take the help of their University to train our employees and receive proper consultation services. It is our strong relationship with Oracle which has ultimately helped us to select them as not only our implementation but our training and consultation partner.”
More than 125 people from Cummins were trained by the Oracle University trainer on the enhanced features of the latest version. The entire training session was covered in two batches and spanned around 50 days in the first phase. The second phase training will be given to other employees in November 2007.
The total cost of the project is around Rs 20 crore which includes hardware, software licensing, training and consultation. The total cost of the training was around Rs 25 lakh. Oracle cash management, purchasing, fixed assets, CRM, order scheduling, inventory, iStore, iSupport, master scheduling and other products and services are offered to Cummins.
Enhancing the productivity of employees
The Oracle E Business Suite went live at Cummins on September 2007. Informs Bandal, “After proper training, the time which we had earlier decided to design the solution was within two and half months but actually it took two months to design the entire solution. Though right now I can’t comment on the ROI front of the ERP deployment, the benefits which our staff has received from the training are tremendous.”
Cummins Inc, the parent company has a global agreement with Oracle. Hence, Cummins India has taken the major part of the licenses from its parent company and as per the need of the Indian business has taken minor licenses from Oracle India.
The company is planning to extend the applications and training programmes to its other business units.
