Simplicity Will Drive IT Growth

Simplicity will drive the growth of global industry by enabling cost reductions and creation of new systems, said Dell chairman and CEO Michael Dell.

Infosys chief S. Gopalakrishnan couldn’t agree with him more while participating in a session on “Innovation and Disruption: The CEO View” at the Fortune Global Forum.

Dell said, “With legacy costs and inflexibility built into the system, we now need to simplify to reduce costs and to create new systems.”

“You can make money by making things complex or you can make money by keeping things simple. We’ve chosen to make money by keeping things simple,” he added.

“There is a large business opportunity to drive costs down by simplifying,” he maintained.

Noting that the IT industry would have to continue to innovate both at the high- and low-end, Gopalakrishnan said simplification of systems would improve efficiency and reduce costs.

“If you look at the forecasting system in the supply chain, there is so much simplification that is possible in the physical world and the digital world,” he pointed out.

Gopalakrishnan also spoke of the “opportunity to improve efficiency” through greater interaction between the IT majors in the future.

“80% of our operations are the same. It’s only the top-end 20% that is specific (to a company). Why should there not be sharing (of resources)?” Gopalakrishnan wondered.

“This pooling of talent would enable us to leverage knowledge and education to create the engineers of the future,” he maintained.

The Fortune Global Forum, which brings together the world’s top industry leaders, is being held in India for the first time.
