Sify's Ajwani Elected As NRO-NC Member

Sify Technologies has announced the election of Naresh Ajwani – president, Consumer Infrastructure and Operations, Sify Technologies, as a member of the Number Resource Organisation – Number Council (NRO-NC), a global policy formulation body for the Internet. Ajwani is the first Indian to be elected to the NRO-NC since its inception.

NRO-NC consists of 15 members representing five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). Ajwani will represent Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC), one of the registries and also co-ordinate with other RIRs for developing the Internet in other countries. Ajwani was chosen out of twelve contestants representing eight countries.

According to APNIC, as a member of NRO- NC, Ajwani will contribute to helping developing economies improve their access to the Internet. As an Executive Council member with ISPAI (Internet Service Providers Association of India), he brings over 25 years of core operational experience to this position. His experience from the Indian Internet story will help bring new perspectives to the making of global policies on Internet.

Ajwani said, "It is a critical period for the Internet community with the forthcoming transition from IPv4 to IPv6. In India, the Internet market will witness major action with the opening up of VoIP. I am excited to represent NRO-NC that will play a significant role in catalysing and ushering in these developments. NRO-NC will also handle issues such as hardware security application and bandwidth."

Besides being at the helm of policy and regulations pertaining to telecom, IT and ITeS, Internet governance, e-commerce, e-security and Internet and broadband, Ajwani is a member of the CII National Committee on IT, ITeS and e-commerce. He is also a Director of the NIXI (National Internet Exchange of India) Board, since September 2007.
