Oracle recently announced its embedded database strategy and roadmap to deliver new enhancements to its existing product lines. As part of the strategy, Oracle will allow Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to embed its offerings including Oracle Database 10g, TimesTen In-Memory Database, Berkeley DB and Database Lite 10g within their products enabling them to deliver more complete, turnkey solutions.
The market for embedded database software is experiencing significant growth stemming from a variety of uses including consumer and mobile devices, desktop and enterprise applications, large-scale networking and storage gear and appliances.
By allowing ISVs and OEMs to embed its database offerings in their products, Oracle is trying to make its products seem more attractive to ISVs and capitalize on the burgeoning segment.
Oracle believes that the only way to succeed in this space is by offering a broad and flexible product line to the ISVs.
“As intelligent devices multiply, networks accelerate, and data volumes expand, there will be a growing need for embedded databases that run in a lights-out, always-on environment with no administration,” said Rex Wang, vice president Embedded Systems Marketing, Oracle. “Oracle is committed to providing customers and partners with the broadest selection of embedded databases to meet the diverse technical requirements of the market.”
Oracle has already formed a new global business unit dedicated to the needs of customers and partners who embed Oracle software into their own products. Also, it has established several innovation labs to support development and testing of embedded products.
