Mumbai-based Micro Technologies has launched new software titled Micro Students Attendance Management System, (SAMS). The SAMS is an automated system for access, attendance and effective communication.

A lot of educational institutions in India are now realising the need for bringing IT from research labs into the infrastructure and the classroom. To gain a competitive advantage, a number of institutes are opting for emerging technologies. It’s not just the start-ups, which are adopting IT. Even well established institutions seem to be very keen on embracing technology to efficiently manage their vast infrastructure, communication and other administration related issues.

The Micro SAMS has been designed to function as a complete solution for educational institutes with features of access control, attendance monitoring and a messaging system. Pro-vice chancellor, SNDT University, Dr S S Mantha says, “Traditionally, student attendance is done using pen and papers. However, computer-based students’ attendance management system helps to assist the faculty and the lecturer by saving their time. These kind of systems, if capable of recording the students’ attendance using interactive input, generating reports, viewing the students’ and lecturers’ profiles, and providing a timetable to students, can be useful in streamlining the administration and improving the campus discipline.”

Micro SAMS has several features such as database management, which can integrate the attendance record of students and lecturers remotely from various locations across the globe at one single point. The authorised administrator can use the online Micro SAMS to remotely view all the relevant details of all the branches of the institution. Micro SAMS also generates various MIS reports related to attendance. RFID/ biometrics-based login and logout for lecturer, students and guest lecturers with image is captured using a Webcam for attendance. Micro SAMS also opens up new ways of communicating critical and important information to wards and their guardians.

How it works:

SAMS is installed on the central server with an Internet connection integrated with the complete database of students within the institution. The Internet is used to upload or download the database files on the server for remote access by the administrator.

Database creation: A database of the students and lecturer is created on the system. If biometric capabilities are required, a finger-print database of lecturers and students can also created.
Logging in for lecturer: When the lecturer walks into the office, he/ she can place his/ her finger on the biometric scanner or flash an RFID card, which then verifies the information stored within the database. Once that is done, the lecturer’s attendance is marked and his/ her image is captured using a webcam.
Logging in for students: When the student enters the class, he/she can flash the registered card in front of the RFID reader, which verifies the student and marks his attendance while also capturing his image. Prior to students marking their attendance, the lecturer flashes his/ her card alerting the system about the subject being taught.
