Not only are manufacturers from across the world setting up shop in India, the Indian economy has seen four years (2004-08) of average 9 percent growth in manufacturing–a manufacturing revolution is underway in India.
However, for sustainability and growth, it is critical that India’s manufacturing sector leverages IT. Keeping in mind the IT needs of the manufacturing industry, E18, the events arm of Network18 will be organizing the “IT for Manufacturing” Forum in Pune on February 7, 2008. Biztech2.0 is the online partner for the event. The Forum would focus on issues such as solutions for the manufacturing industry, specific problems faced by the SME segment in adopting IT, issues around IT governance and IT outsourcing models.
According to Professor David Upton, “IT is not something you can use as support to help get the ‘real work’ done; instead, it has become integrated with the whole manufacturing process—something that has to be managed every day.”
Competitiveness will be central to robust growth of the manufacturing industry. Lowering the cost of manufacturing and improving the quality will be essential for competitiveness. IT has a significant role to play in helping the sector become more cost effective and agile. Developing effective coordination of customers, complementors and the supply chain will be a key competitive advantage in operations."
