In the overall PC (notebooks and desktops combined) market, HP retained the top spot with a market share of 17.1 percent, while Dell (11.3 percent) and Acer (11.1 percent) took the second and third spots, respectively.

In terms of desktop PC shipments, HP retained its top position with a market share of 12.2 percent, followed by HCL and Acer in second and third spots, respectively during 3Q CY09. In terms of notebook PC shipments, HP retained the top spot with a market share of 27.0 percent in 3Q CY09; Dell retained the second spot, while Acer came third.

Kapil Dev Singh, Country Manager, IDC India, said, “The July-September quarter experienced a strong boost from new found consumer confidence that reflected in increased demand during the festive season. Overall consumer PC sales recorded a 28 percent growth quarter-on-quarter (3Q CY09 over 2Q CY09). This performance underlines the recovery in the India PC market.”

The 21 percent quarter-on-quarter growth in the commercial PC shipments was a result of improved shipments across all sectors. While shipments to the public sector (government) topped the growth charts during the quarter, the news of growth of shipments to large and very large enterprises will be welcomed by the industry.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

“Commercial PC sales can be expected to steadily improve as the economy recovers. Even though the consumer PC segment recorded a faster 28 percent QoQ growth, industry will need to watch how the recovery in consumer PC shipments unfolds in the quarters ahead,” said Sumanta Mukherjee, Lead PC Analyst, IDC India.
