HP Commences Fulfillment Of UP State Government Contract

Hewlett-Packard has begun fulfilment for India’s largest digital inclusion project – the distribution of 1.5 million HP notebooks by Uttar Pradesh (UP) government to eligible students in the state. The first 10,000 HP notebooks were handed out by the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Akhilesh Yadav at a ceremony held at Colvin Taluqdars’ College in Lucknow.

As part of the project, HP notebooks are being provided by the UP state government to all students passing Class 12 or equivalent examinations in 2012, and enrolling for higher education, across 313 tehsils in the Uttar Pradesh region.

“We truly believe that by empowering students and teachers globally, we can address some of the bigger social challenges around the world. We envision a world with unlimited educational opportunities and believe there is no better way to address society’s most pressing challenges than by equipping students, educators and future entrepreneurs with the skills for turning ideas and ambition into action,” Srivastava added.

This contract provides students a world-class product and support experience, and positions HP as a frontrunner in innovative digital inclusion projects.

On January 28, the UP state government awarded the Rs. 2,800 crore (USD 515 mn approx) contract to HP to supply 1.5 million notebooks over a seven month period. HP was selected to be the sole provider following a stringent selection process that evaluated all aspects of the device, distribution, after sales support, pricing and training capabilities.

This project is a powerful boost to higher education in the state and is in sync with the UP government’s vision to drive social progress by empowering students with technology.

Shri Prabhat Mittal, Managing Director, UP Electronics Corporation Limited said, “Ambitious projects such as these are part of state government plans to empower youth to be future-ready, equipped with skills relevant for the twenty first century.”
