Honeywell Automation Systems Chosen By Shipbuilders

Honeywell has announced that Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and STX Offshore & Shipbuilding (STX) will use Honeywell’s Integrated Automation Systems (IAS) in five vessels commissioned by ship owners in Norway, Russia and the United States. The projects are valued at more than US$8 million.

DSME, the world’s second largest shipbuilder, and STX, the world’s fourth largest shipbuilder, will use IAS in vessels under construction for the transportation of liquid natural gas (LNG). DSME is building the industry’s largest advanced floating storage and regasification unit capable of delivering 20 million cubic meters per day of natural gas to south-eastern Brazil.

The IAS solution uses Honeywell’s Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS), and will manage the machinery and cargo areas of the vessels, including the cargo emergency shutdown system. Honeywell’s solution enables the project teams to better manage and control operations and ensure that the vessels comply with strict global standards.

“For more than 12 years, DSME and Honeywell have worked in collaboration and delivered over 40 complex projects successfully and on schedule,” said Sang-Cheol Lee, senior manager, DSME Co. Ltd. “We appreciate Honeywell’s ability to deliver a reliable and robust automation solution, and to jointly develop various systems such as re-gasification, re-liquefaction and main engine gas injection (MEGI). These new systems have been instrumental in helping DSME stay ahead of competition.”

“We selected Honeywell for the quality of its process automation, global expertise and reputation for successfully delivering complex projects on-time,” said Dong-Min Seo, senior manager, STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. “The initial project start has been promising and we look forward to a fruitful, long-term relationship together.”

“We are using our award-winning solutions to help DSME and STX keep their ships running under harsh conditions,” said David Higgins, director - marine, Honeywell Process Solutions. “These LNG vessels will be able to integrate production, processing, and transportation operations, and ensure strict compliance with security, safety, regulatory and environmental requirements.”

Honeywell has successfully delivered more than 100 integrated automation systems for all types of carriers, and is currently engineering the industry’s first LNG floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit.
