Global FPSM Market Shows Significant Gains

New International Data Corporation (IDC) research shows that the worldwide financial performance, strategy management and GRC (FPSM) applications market saw continued momentum in 2011 as pent-up demand for FPSM products led to increased budgets for addressing the management and optimisation of key processes of the office of finance. SAP and Oracle co-lead this market, and both made strides in supporting the consolidation and close processes as well as in expanding risk-driven planning capabilities, which helped win new customers.

“The financial performance, strategy management, and GRC software market saw healthy growth in 2011, which bodes well for this highly competitive market in 2012,” said Brian McDonough, research manager with IDC’s Business Analytics Solutions service. “Additional strides in performance of the software will appeal to the market as it is increasingly run on new technologies such as in-memory databases. Mobile access to performance metrics and alerting can help the office of finance to better collaborate with lines of business in the future and will help drive sales.”

The financial performance, strategy management, and GRC applications market showed significant gains in 2011. Specifically:

  • Worldwide revenue for the FPSM applications market was $3.0 billion in 2011, representing growth of 16.3 percent.

  • IBM, Oracle, and SAP accounted for 62.5 percent of the market total (based on worldwide revenue), compared with 61.4 percent in 2010.

IDC expects a contested and competitive market in 2012 as Oracle and SAP strive for leadership within the FPSM applications market. Oracle has been historically stronger in the consolidation and close segment with SAP performing well in risk management, budgeting, and profitability management. In 2012, IDC expects these vendors to focus on bolstering capabilities to offer high-performance applications.

This IDC study, Worldwide Financial Performance, Strategy Management and GRC Applications 2011 Vendor Shares examines the financial performance, strategy management, and GRC applications market for the period from 2009 to 2011. Revenue and market share of the leading vendors are provided for 2011. This report marks the first year of an expanded definition of the FPSM market to include finance-related GRC applications as well as cross-functional GRC applications used to manage and monitor compliance, risk, and governance policies and procedures organisation-wide. It excludes GRC applications used to manage any single operational risk function as well vertical-specific GRC applications.
