Android is gaining a lot of popularity, how will it augment the smartphone market?

Earlier, there were numerous platforms for mobiles devices and they were proprietary in nature. Android has played a huge role in creating a large smartphone market and ample opportunities to developers. Android is now a close competitor of Apple as its popularity increases with users and developers alike. Today, there are more than 59 models of smartphones that are running on Android.
I feel, Android has changed the rules of the game and provided equal opportunities to smaller players as well. The open source nature of Android is a major reason for a large number of innovations that we see popping up. Now, major mobile manufacturers like HTC, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and Samsung are opting for Android and each of them have their own UIs.
