Data Protection Strategy Should Be Business Centric

With organisations getting lost in the world of exploding data, management and security of data are two critical aspects that CIOs need to address. Meheriar Patel, CTO, Globus, in conversation with Biztech2.com, highlights his views on these two areas.

What challenges do enterprises face when it comes to securing their data?

According to my experience in this industry organisations face a big challenge in adding a protection layer on data. For instance, securing a particular email or data through a password will create an obstacle for people using it, as every time they have to ask for the password and then log in. So, when a CIO thinks of protecting the data he should take precautionary measures and should keep in mind the business environment that the enterprise is operating in.

What should a data protection strategy entail?

The data protection strategy should be linked to the business requirement. For instance, if the company is into banking and finance it needs to embrace the best strategy in terms of what should be available and what should not be available, and there should be governance to this situation. In such a scenario the CIO should make sure that the governance is applied to the business application and this strategy should be business and industry centric.

Is Integrated Data Lifecycle Management a good approach for enterprises?

Integrated data lifecycle management will prove to be a good approach only when three scenarios are in place The first would be if the archival policy is crystal clear with all the important data in place. Second, the area for data on the shelf should be very clear without any inappropriate data. And, last but not the least, putting in place a process for DLP lifecycle management. If enterprises follow this approach then integrated data lifecycle management will prove to be the best practice in the times to come.
