Business Intelligence (BI) is the key driver for an enterprise’s agile functioning. But, this requires a clear vision to leverage the resources effectively for analytics. What major concerns are involved in managing BI solution effectively, and how can CIOs counter these?

Firstly, BI is resourceful in itself, but it is very difficult for an enterprise to utilise these resources effectively. When an enterprise implements a BI solution, the decision makers lack a clear vision of managing the operations tactfully. Most of the time, companies fail to leverage simple tools and processes for analytics, and also fail to create closed loop intelligent workflow and consolidate data from disparate sources.

In order to counter the aforesaid short comings, the CIO should integrate a concrete BI plan into the enterprise IT architecture. Also, surfacing BI to the desktop and building an enterprise wide reporting platform will help gain better visibility. This will help the organisation drive business value from the available resources. The onus lies on the CIO to customise the implementation and add maturity to it.

Your tips for enterprises to effectively leverage collaboration, and how can they make the most of it?

It is extremely important for enterprises to learn that doing any from of collaboration is not an end. It is the beginning of a new race, where the enterprise needs to keep moving up consistently. In order to excel in collaboration, companies should collaborate at multiple levels - they should invest in long-term strategic collaboration, monthly or quarterly conscious collaboration and detailed day-to-day functional collaboration.

With the help of collaboration an enterprise can manage communication more efficiently. It pre-defines the framework and template, and helps in cutting development time, thereby accelerating time to market delivery.

Can you share some of the broader trends around Unified Communication, a key enabler for collaboration?

Unified Communication has been around for a while, but with the change in time the demands from UC have also changed significantly. Today enterprises are looking at a single and mature platform to offer UC, which can provide a cohesive solution to accommodate all forms of communication like IM, constant chat, video conferencing, voice and collaboration. While this transformation from different applications and solutions to a single platform is complicating and challenging in itself, it is a trend which will take over very soon.
