Human capital is the most critical and important element to ensure effective IT solutions and services.
The ‘T’ in IT is all about Team Dynamics, Team Collaboration & Teamwork. The Team doesn’t include only the ‘internal’ employees but also partners, solution providers and external support teams.
I feel, employees can be motivated by providing a clear direction and vision; having open communication; and demonstrating transparency and trust.
A clear and unambiguous direction is a must! The IT staff should be conveyed a clear direction and be provided with an overview of the business strategy, its plans and the broader picture. It must be very clear to the staff as to how their role fits into the overall objective and once this is done, it becomes a lot easier to get the best out of the team once they have clearly defined goals.
For example, a programmer writing his code without a clear idea about the business implications will not be as excited about his work as the one who knows about where his code will be used and how it will benefit the organisation. Once he/she is aware of the broader picture, it will make one realise the impact/value of his/her contribution to the overall objective and this will drive him/her to work lot more efficiently and effectively.
Open and clear communication within the team and a work environment that has transparency and trust within the team goes a long way in employee motivation and building winning teams.
Companies should also continue to invest in skill development of its IT staff by providing learning opportunities, challenging tasks, making them interact with the senior management and business leaders and developing broader skills.
As CIOs, it is our obligation to develop the IT staff into well rounded IT professionals and future IT leaders and we must invest into our People to create winning teams.
